With the removal of Clips from the App Store and the announcement that it will no longer be receiving updates, Apple seems to be ending support for the app.
As of October 10, Clips is no longer available for new users to download, according to a support page on the Apple website. However, current users can still use the app on iOS and iPadOS versions that are current or older. If necessary, current users can also redownload the app from their Apple account.
Apple is urging users to download their Clips videos—with or without added effects—to their photo library so they can view and edit the videos using other apps because, in the absence of updates, using Clips will likely become more challenging over time.
When Clips was first released in 2017, it seemed to be Apple’s response to Instagram Stories and Snapchat. It wasn’t a social network, but it did let users combine images and videos with music, emojis, and filters.
Brian Heater of TechCrunch initially characterized Clips’ video editing features as being extremely basic, implying that the app might enable Apple to demonstrate its hardware and software prowess while providing users with an escape from the social ecosystems that were then gaining popularity.
According to MacRumors, Apple added new features to Clips after it was first released, but updates in the last few years have only addressed bugs.
Reddit users who are Apple fans expressed that they were not surprised by the news, stating that they had either never heard of the app or had only used it years ago. Furthermore, compared to Sora, OpenAI’s generative AI video app, which recently reached one million downloads, an app like Clips, which is based on real footage taken by real people, might seem a little outdated.
